That sounds (and looks) fun! On Pender Island Hallowe'en is very low key too. I kind of miss having kids come to the door, and I loved Hallowe'en trick or treating when I was a kid (except when it rained), but for everything I miss there are *more* things that I enjoy about small island life. I hope I never have to live in a city again!

This blog is such a great idea - I'm doing my research now and planning on finally moving to an island in about 3 years. Most of the info on the web is for tourists and there isn't very much about the nitty gritty of island life. Making a living, the politics of the place, the drawbacks, the surprises. So thank you!

I look forward to visiting Mayne Island one day. It's great to know which beaches to visit. Thank you!

The Gulf Islands seem to have a lot in common, but for me each one has a different overall 'feel' so exploring is always interesting.

That's really interesting. This is my first major exposure to deer thus the only size I know. :) But even so I have been surprised by how wee the fawns can be. I almost mistook one of them for a large hare or smallish dog!

I have to admit I was somewhat used to the deer by the time I moved here. There are actually a ton of deer in Southern Alberta, even in the cities. The thing I noticed most in the Gulf Islands is how small they are though (different species). A lot of visitors to the islands mistake adult deer for juveniles -- but that's really how big they get!

Thanks for the great post Lillea!

P.S. prepare to get a few kayaking-related posts. I've been kayaking a bit with the folks over at Mayne Island Kayaking, and I'll be putting up a few pictorials/video posts related to that soon.
